Why there is no safe national checklist

The applicable rule depends on more than your postcode

Australian jurisdictions use different legislation, administrative processes and editions or variations of technical standards. Transitional arrangements can mean two pools in the same jurisdiction are assessed differently because of their approval or installation dates.

Property use can also matter. Registration, inspection, certificate, sale and lease obligations should be checked against the current official guidance for the property rather than inferred from a national summary.

Safety basics

Practical checks that do not replace an inspection

Supervise actively

A barrier is not a substitute for active adult supervision. Keep young children within direct sight and reach around water.

Never prop a gate open

Keep access gates closed. If a gate or latch is not working reliably, restrict access to the pool area until it is repaired and assessed.

Watch for new hazards

Regularly look for damage, movement, vegetation or stored objects that could affect the barrier. Do not treat a visual check as proof of compliance.

Use a qualified assessment

For compliance questions, use the authority's process and independently verify any required inspector registration or licence before engagement.

If a barrier or gate is defective

Keep children and visitors away from the pool area, prevent access where it is safe to do so, and arrange prompt advice or repair through the relevant authority, council or appropriately registered professional. In an emergency, call 000.
